Alarm

The only honest admission we can make is that we know almost nothing about emotions. Science tries to catch them through neural circuits, chemical signals, and shifts in electrical activity within the brain. But all of this is only a shadow, not the emotion itself.

Emotions refuse such agreement. We invented words for them — fear, joy, doubt. But a word captures only the outer shell of what unfolds inside. Two people may experience “fear,” yet their inner landscapes will be so different that the only thing they truly share is the name.

Culture makes this even more complex. What one person calls sadness, another might feel as shame. Emotions live in the space between the body and meaning, and precisely because of this, they slip away from any scientific category.

An emotion is an exclusive experience — something that exists only inside the subject. It can be described, but not measured. Its physiological mechanisms can be explained, but not reduced to them. Its manifestations can be observed, but not the emotion itself.

We can record the consequences of an emotion, but not its nature. And it seems that this is what makes human inner life so obscure, fragile, and unique — something that cannot be captured by precise units of measurement.
